Being the giant geek that I am, I run into tons of awesome tools and utilities that make my digital life easier. Here are some of them as well as the podcasts that I listen to and learn so much from.
Software
This is a list of all the software I would install on you machine if you were away at you grandma’s house and forgot to close your house window. All of these software are free.
- Google Chrome:
I’ve been using Google’s Chrome browser since a little after it launched and I can’t imagine using anything else. It’s so slim and sleek that you hardly notice it. Which is exactly how a browser should be. - Dropbox:
If you have more than one computer, there is no reason for you to NOT be using Dropbox. Free and easy to use, Dropbox is a convenient way to keep your important files synced between your computers and the cloud. - VLC Media Player:
Not to sound hyperbolic, but VLC is one of the the greatest media players out there. There is pretty much no type of file it can’t play. It can also convert files and record streams. Truly, it is the swiss army knife of media players. - WriteMonkey:
“Zenware for full screen distraction free creative writing. No whistles and bells, just empty screen, you and your words. WriteMonkey is light, fast, and perfectly handy for those who enjoy the simplicity of a typewriter but live in modern times.” – WriteMonkey Homepage.
Podcasts
A Podcast is basically an MP3 referenced to by an RSS feed. If you are reading this and your name is Leo Laporte, sorry Leo, but its called Podcast. I dont think netcast will catch on. But if it makes you feel better, i will say this; YOU DO NOT NEED A IPOD TO LISTEN TO PODCASTS.
- TWiT Netcast Network
“Doin the twit (allright), Doin the Twit…Baby…” God that song is addictive. Twit.tv is a great podcast network for folks who dig technology. - Geeknights with Rym and Scott
For geeks like me, this is a great podcast. Two episodes a week, this is one podcast you do not want to miss.
